The Sports Doctor to be back on TARN airwaves

STEPHENVILLE ? The Sports Doctor has returned.

Tarleton Athletics Director Lonn Reisman has announced that Dr. Ron Newsome, affectionately known as “The Sports Doctor,” will return to the airwaves as the Voice of the Texans on KSTV 93.1 FM.

“We are very happy to have The Sports Doctor, Ron Newsome, back with the Tarleton Athletics Radio Network,” Reisman said. “He brings tremendous experience to the job of play-by-play announcer, both as a coach and as a broadcaster. He also brings a deep historical perspective to the radio because he has been a part of Tarleton for many years.”

Newsome returns to the TARN after a three-year hiatus.

“I am thrilled about returning,” Newsome said. “When Lonn asked me to return as the voice of the Texans, I was very excited.”

Newsome, who has called Tarleton athletics for 12 years, including nine straight, brings a wealth of experience to the microphone, from both the broadcasting booth and the sidelines.

A football coach for six different colleges, Newsome became an athletics administrator and professor. He served as the athletics director for Tarleton from 1989-93. He worked at Tarleton for 26 years before retiring in August.

“There are not many play-by-play broadcasters who have actually coached football for several years,” Newsome said. “I hope I can bring that experience to the people listening on the other end of the radio to give the fans a different perspective.

“I have been around Tarleton for a long time, and I have seen some of the greatest players to have played for the purple and white through the years,” Newsome said. “I want to use that historical knowledge to make the broadcast something special.”

Newsome coached at Texas A&M-Commerce for five years before a stint at Ouachita Baptist and prior to serving two and a half years as the head coach at Western New Mexico. Newsome has also coached at Arkansas Tech, Ouachita Baptist and Southeastern Oklahoma before his time at Tarleton. He also worked at Houston for two years as an athletics administrator.

After his first broadcasting stint with the Texans and TexAnns, Newsome served as the color commentator for TAMUC for two seasons.

The Voice of the Texans will be the play-by-play announcer for football and men's basketball while also doing women's basketball play-by-play on the road.

Newsome graduated from TAMUC in 1966 with a bachelor's degree, in 1971 with a master's degree and in 1988 with a doctorate.

Newsome is married to his wife, Alice, and has one son, Seth, who attends Sam Houston State. The couple resides in Stephenville.

“To have the opportunity to do radio again is something I truly look forward to,” Newsome said.
