Three to be added to Tarleton Athletics Hall of Fame

STEPHENVILLE ? The Tarleton Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2008 will be honored with a luncheon on Hall of Fame Weekend, Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. Former letterwinners Rachelle Bowen, Ed Milton and Kevin Vickers will be honored for their success while competing for the purple and white.

The luncheon will be held at the Thompson Student Center and tickets can be purchased for $15 by reservation. RSVP to Cathy at 254-968-9178 by Thursday, Sept. 4 at noon.

Bowen played for the TexAnn basketball squad in 1995-96 and 1996-97, Milton lettered for the Texan basketball team in 1989-93 and Vickers was a Tarleton football standout from 1991-94.

Bowen, who transferred to Tarleton from Trinity, holds the school's single-game scoring record with 49 against Whittier College on Dec. 30, 1996. She also holds the school record in scoring average in a career with 18.7 points per game (52 games, 971 points), and she holds the record for field goals made in a game with 20 against Whittier. Bowen was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 1996 and 1997.

Bowen started all 26 games for the TexAnns in 1995-96 and averaged 18.2 points per game to lead the team. Tarleton was 12-14 overall and 8-8 in LSC play that season as she averaged 6.5 rebounds per game, second on the team to Jana Skelton (8.1). She averaged .446 from the field, .404 from the three-point arc and .740 from the charity stripe. She also averaged 35.0 minutes and recorded 66 assists and 57 steals with two double-doubles.

In 1996-97, Bowen led the team with 19.1 points per game, and she tied with Saresa Butler for the lead in rebounds per game with 7.1. She started all 26 games for the TexAnns who finished the season 10-16 overall, 6-12 in the LSC. Bowen led the team in scoring on 13 occasions and in rebounding on seven occasions. She had four double-doubles while averaging .407 from the field, .367 from the arc and .746 from the line. She averaged 35.8 minutes per game and recorded 60 assists and 47 steals.

Milton leads the men's basketball school's career assist list with 557 in 109 games (5.1 average). Milton also holds school records for assists in a season (247 in 1992-93) and in career (557).

In the 1989-90 season, Milton played in just 13 games. He recorded 14 rebounds, nine assists, six steals and nine points. In 1990-91, he started 20 of 27 games played and averaged 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds. He was second on the team with 114 assists behind Jason Hooten with 123. Milton also recorded 42 steals and averaged .404 from the field, .250 from the arc and .630 from the line. He had two double-digit assist games and one double-digit point contest.

In 1991-92, Milton averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He recorded a team-high 187 assists (5.2 per game). He started all 36 games for the Texans and recorded 58 steals while averaging .481 from the field, .390 from the arc and .732 from the line. He averaged 35 minutes per game.

In 1992-93 as a senior, Milton averaged 7.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest. He recorded 247 assists (7.5 per game). He also had two blocks and 56 steals while averaging 38 minutes a game. He had five games with double-digit assists while scoring in double digits in nine games.

Vickers was a four-year letter winner for the Texan football team where he excelled as both a receiver and a quarterback. He played solely as a receiver during the 1991-92 seasons, but took over as the starting quarterback in 1994.

As a freshman, he caught six passes for 83 yards and averaged 13.8 yards per game. During his sophomore season, he led the team with 32 receptions for 487 yards and an average of 48.7 yards per game. He caught a season-high 68-yard catch against East Central for a touchdown.

In 1993, he split time as a receiver and a quarterback. He played eight games and caught 10 passes for 113 yards, while completing 38 passes for 408 yards and two touchdowns.

As a senior, Vickers took over the starting quarterback position and set nine individual passing and total offense records. He broke the single season records for most total yards (3,232), most total plays (487), most passing yards (3,008), most pass attempts (371), most pass completions (189) and most touchdown passes (24). Vickers had a total of 477 yards against Ouachita Baptist on September 24, including 435 passing yards to set single game records for total yards and passing yards. He threw for seven touchdowns against Southwestern Kansas on the final game of the season to set a single-game record for most touchdowns in a game, and led his team to a 49-30 victory. For his efforts, Vickers earned the Higgs Award (MVP) and the Most Valuable Offensive player honors. Overall, he led the team in total offense and was second in scoring after adding 224 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns to his total.

The trio will join 120 other former Tarleton Hall of Fame members included the school's most prestigious athletic group.
