STEPHENVILLE - The No. 21 Tarleton TexAnn tennis team opened Lone Star Conference play with a 6-3 win over No. 36 Cameron at CU Tennis Courts in Lawton, Okla., on Tuesday.
"The weather conditions were tough today, but the girls stayed strong," Tarleton head tennis coach
Lance Drake said. "I was very pleased with their efforts and I am happy to open conference play with a win."
The TexAnns improved to 7-4 overall in the spring season and are now 1-0 in conference play. The Aggies dropped to 5-3 overall and are now 1-1 in LSC action.
Tarleton opened doubles play with a loss as Cameron's Amanda Moberg and Julia PuckHaber defeated Mariana Freias and
Rocio Cabanillas, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles. Tarleton countered with a pair of wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles though, to take a 2-1 lead.
Jade Charlot and
Evgeniya Prokofeva defeated Elle Sholles and Carolina Mullor, 9-8, while Adrianna Jaskova and
Carole Julen downed Sara Flores and Heather Doslich, 8-1.
The TexAnns dropped the first two flights of singles action to the Aggies when Jaskova fell to Moberg (7-5, 6-4) and Freitas dropped her set to PuckHaber (6-2, 6-4). The two singles wins put the Aggies on top 3-2, but Tarleton closed out the day winning the final four matches.
Cabanillas downed Flores (6-2, 6-2) in the third flight while Charlot took care of Sholles (7-5, 6-2) in No. 4 singles. In the fifth flight of singles, Julen defeated Mullor (6-2, 7-5) before Prokofeva wrapped up the match with a win over Daniela Stevenson (4-6, 6-2, 6-0).
The TexAnns will be back in action on Wednesday, March 10 in the spring home-opener against No. 7 Abilene Christian. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts on the Tarleton campus.
