GOODYEAR, Ariz. – TexAnn junior Carla Cooper claimed her second straight individual title after shooting seven-under par while helping No. 5 Tarleton to a 31-stroke victory at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz.
The TexAnns shot a 294 on day two to better their first-day total of 298 to finish with a 592. The TexAnns claimed first through third individually as Tarleton won its fifth tournament of the season.
Cooper shot a 66 on day one and a 71 on day two to claim the individual title with a 137, 11 strokes better than second-place finisher Jacqueline Lau. Lau shot a 76 and 72 to finish with a 148. Melanie Tham finished third with a 152 (78-74) while Andrea Lowe tied for eighth with a 155 (78-77) and Katy Ward finished tied for 30th with a 161 (84-77).
No. 17 Grand Canyon finished second with a 623 (316-307), No. 8 Cal State-Monterey Bay was third with a 625 (321-304), Sonoma State was fourth with a 627 (314-313) and No. 10 St. Edward's finished fifth with a 324 (324-308). T-No. 25 West Texas A&M (328-308-636), No. 9 Western Washington (325-316-641), Western New Mexico (324-318-642), T-No. 25 Northeastern State (327-318-645), St. Martin's (321-325-646), No. 21 Central Oklahoma (324-327-651), Academy of Art (330-324-654), Chico State (330-327-657), Texas A&M-Commerce (344-333-677), St. Mary's (352-339-691), Montana State-Billings (364-354-718) and Colorado State-Pueblo (376-357-732).
Tarleton has now claimed five of the last seven tournaments this season dating back to the fall semester. Tarleton has finished second and third in the other two tournaments during that run after opening the season in sixth at a tournament in Florida.
Over the last three-plus seasons, the TexAnns have won 23 of their last 36 tournaments and finished in the top five in all but two and in the top seven in each of them.
Tarleton will return to action in its own Tarleton/Coca-Cola Classic on April 12-13 at Harbor Lakes in Granbury.
