SAN ANGELO – The Tarleton men's track & field team finished third overall, while the women's team finished in fifth-place following the 2010 Lone Star Conference Track & Field Championships at LeGrand Sports Complex in San Angelo on Sunday.
The Texans tallied 108 total points to finish just ahead of West Texas A&M (106) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (106) which tied for fourth-place overall. Abilene Christian claimed an unprecedented 17th straight LSC Championship, accumulating 205 points to overcome Angelo State, which finished with 195 points for second-place.
Rounding out the totals for the men's championship included Eastern New Mexico recording 52 points for sixth-place and Texas A&M-Commerce tallying 44 points to finish seventh overall.
The Texans got things started on Sunday accumulating 12 points in the discus event. Tarleton's Casey Keeter (51.74m), Nolan Eubanks (50.65m) and Hayden Eubanks (49.93m) finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the event to get the day going.
Tyler Rushing and Cyler Matlock kept the pace for the Texans in field events, collecting third and seventh-place finishes, respectfully, in the men's high jump. Rushing took bronze with a leap of 1.96m, while Matlock had a jump of 1.91m to finish in the top-eight.
In Sunday's running event finals, Jamal Mays picked up a bronze in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.57 and Jared McNeil followed with a fourth-place finish in the 400m run with a time of 1:56.45. McNeil then finished third in the 1500m run with a time of 4:00.85 and was followed by Chris Hearell in seventh (4:04.35) and Jonathan Kern in eighth (4:06.23).
Senior All-American Garrett Thomas picked up the Texans' lone gold-medal on the day after winning the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.44. Thomas has won seven of the nine meets he has competed in going into the final two meets of the year.
The Texans had three top-eight finishers in the men's 5000m run with Gerzain Valenzuela leading the way with a bronze-medal finish (15:13.96). He was followed by Westyn Rosiles in sixth (15:24.32) and Ryan Quezada (15:39.66) in seventh.
Both men's relay teams picked up fourth place finishes to round out Sundays competition. The 4x100m relay team finished in 41.91, while the 4x400m relay team crossed the finish line at 3:16.74.
Angelo State women's team won its second straight LSC title on Sunday, accumulating 297 points over the weekend. Abilene Christian finished in second with 204 points in the championship. West Texas A&M (88) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (77) finished just ahead of the TexAnns, while Eastern New Mexico (35), Central Oklahoma (18) and Texas A&M-Commerce (13) followed.
The TexAnns started the day collecting three top-eight finishes at the discus event as well, with Elizabeth Dominguez garnering a bronze medal performance with a toss of 42.66m. Jordan Leslie followed in sixth with a throw of 40.98m, while Meredeth Persinger followed with a mark of 38.06m.
Courtney Newsom, participating in her first LSC Championship high jump event, then picked up a fifth-place finish in the women's high jump with a lead up 1.57m to round out Sunday's field events.
The TexAnns opened the day with a fifth-place finish in the 4x100m relay as the quartet came in at 48.78.
Kandis Brooks then followed with a seventh-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 25.48. Newsom then followed with a sixth-place finish in the 400m run with a time of 58.65. Danitra Marshall followed right behind her in seventh with a time of 59.38.
Brooks had her best run of the day in the women's 100m hurdles, finishing third in the event with a season-best time of 13.96 – just 0.06 seconds off from automatically qualifying for the national meet.
The TexAnns closed out the meet with a winning performance in the 4x400m relay, finishing first with a time of 3:16.74.
Both teams will return to action this coming Thursday in San Antonio for the last chance meet – giving athletes one more shot to either set a provisional time/mark or automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship which is set for May 27, in Charlotte N.C.
