DURANT, Okla. - The No. 15 Texan baseball team split their doubleheader with Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday, losing the first game 5-1 before picking up the night-cap 4-3.
GAME 1 - SEOKU 5, Tarleton 1
In the first game of the day, Tarleton was able to get on the board first when
Ethan Stuckly laced an RBI single, plating
Landon McCall for a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, that would be all the runs the Texans would get in the first game, despite recording five hits.
The host Savage Storm would go on to put up two runs in the fourth and three runs in fifth, handing Tarleton their fifth loss of the year.
Stuckly provided the Texans lone run in the game, while
Mark Jeffery,
Travis Hayes,
Zane Hensley and McCall also contributed hits.
Starter
Miguel Ramirez (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, after giving up two runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. It was the first time this season that Ramirez has been touched up for more than a single run in a game.
SEOKU's Jimmy Johnson (3-2) picked up the win after pitching all seven innings for the Savage Storm.
GAME 2 - Tarleton 4, SEOKU 3
The Texans were able to pick up a victory in the second game of the doubleheader after a fast start powered them past Southeastern Oklahoma, 4-3.
Coming off a disappointing effort in game one, Tarleton shot right out of the gate in game two.
Andrew Wolfe and Hensley got things started with back-to-back singles, before converting a double-steal of second and third.
Reagan Janda took advantage of the runners in scoring postition by blasting a two-run double, puttin the Texans up 2-0 early.
Tarleton continued the assault in the top of the second when TIm Rainey scored on a double-play and
Nathan Hille scored on an error, both of whom singled to lead-off the inning. This gave the Texans a comfortable 4-0 lead through the first two innings.
SEOKU was able to pick up a run in the botgtom of the second and the bottom of the fifth, but it was still not enough to catch Tarleton.
The Savage Storm threatened the Texans chances in the eighth when they scored their third run with two outs, but starter
Brandon Van Riper managed to close the door without any further damage.
That meant it would be closer
Ryan Turner's time to come in and hold on the the advantage for Tarleton. Once again, Turner would blank SEOKU effortlessly, tossing a shutout ninth and picking up two strikeouts for his fifth save of the year.
Hensley led the Texans offensively with a 3-for-5 outing and a run scored, while Janda provided both of Tarleton's RBI's. Rainey also had a three-hit game, with Wolfe and Hille adding two-hit games.
The Texans out-hit the Savage Storm 13-4 in the final game of the three-game set.
Van Riper (2-1) was stellar for eight innings on the mound for the Texans, giving up three runs on just three hits and overcame an early control-issue to give Tarleton their only win of the series.
The Texans will return home for a single game against Northwood on Tuesday, March 15 at 3 p.m. at the Cecil Ballow baseball Complex.
