AMARILLO – The No. 3 Tarleton TexAnns battled cold and windy conditions on Sunday in the first round of the NCAA West Region Championships at Tascosa Country Club in Amarillo to finish 11 strokes ahead of the nearest competition. The TexAnns shot a 307 and are led by the top individual, Carla Cooper, with a 73.
Cooper leads all individuals by three strokes, including teammate Melanie Tham who is tied for second with a 76. Katy Ward is tied for ninth with a 78 while Jacqueline Lau is tied at No. 17 with an 80 and Sharon Lau is tied at No. 35 with an 84.
California State-Monterey Bay and St. Edward's are tied for second with a 318 each while Western Washington (320), Grand Canyon (321), Central Oklahoma (321), Northeastern State (325), Sonoma State (327) and Nebraska-Omaha (333) round out the field of competition.
The TexAnns will tee off starting at noon on Monday for the second of three rounds at the regional tournament.
Tarleton has won the last four regional titles, dating back to the 2007 season.
