STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton Texan men's basketball program has announced its first signing of the offseason with the addition of NCAA Division I recruit Shedrick Haynes.

Haynes, a 6-0, 180-pound guard from Brandenton, Fla., will transfer from Big East Conference school South Florida to play his final season with the Texans in 2011-12.

“Shedrick brings an immediate impact guard to our program,” said Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman. “He is a multi-threat player. He is a great shooter, but he also has athletic ability to beat a defender and create his own shot or set up others. The thing that stood out most during the recruiting process was how great a young man Shedrick is and how he will become an excellent ambassador for our Tarleton basketball program. It was important to our staff to not only find a player with Shedrick's ability, but also a guy that will lead vocally and by example. Shedrick has a desire to succeed, and during our meetings it was evident that he will bring a unique energy with him, and he can handle the lofty expectations we have here at Tarleton.”

Haynes played 25 games during the 2010-11 season at USF off the bench. He made his Bulls' debut by scoring six points and handing out a team-high three assists in nine minutes against Southern Mississippi before notching six assists and five points in 26 minutes against St. Francis on Nov. 15. On December 4, Haynes tied his season-high of six points against Florida Atlantic. He tallied three points and two assists against Cincinnati on March 9.

Before his stint at USF, Haynes played the 2009-10 season at Lackawanna Junior College and was the No. 42-ranked JUCO player in the country according to JUCOJunction.com. He was a National Junior College Athletics Association All-America selection and was named to the Region XIX Division II All-Region First Team. Haynes averaged 18.5 points per game and totaled 105 rebounds, 71 assists and 36 steals in his sophomore campaign. He was one of the country's top three-point shooters, hitting 98 treys with a 42 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc for the Falcons. He scored 36 points against Technical Career Institute and 32 points against Raritan Valley (N.J.) while hitting eight three-point buckets.

In 2008-09, Haynes played at Manatee Community College where he averaged 13 points, four assists and three steals per game. He was a SunCoast All-Conference selection. He participated in the Top 120 Jerry Mullen All-American Camp in July 2009.

The newest Texan played AAU basketball with the Bay City Ballers.

Haynes is a graduate of Booker High School and is the son of James and Carolyn Haynes. He has three siblings, James, Mike and Jayme. He owns a 42-inch vertical leap and plans to major in criminology or liberal arts.

“Now I am doing what is best for me and will be able to show my capabilities,” Haynes said. “The offense at Tarleton is a lot like the one we ran at Lackawanna. I expect a good season. It's my last opportunity and I am putting in a lot more work than I did before. I am a tougher player now and learned a lot more about the game and about work ethic.”
