RICHARDSON - The Lone Star Conference office announced the preseason polls for the 2012 baseball season and tagged Tarleton to finish second in the LSC.
The Texans were 35-15 last season and made trips to the LSC and NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournaments. It was the most successful season under head coach
Bryan Conger and was thanks in large part to a talented senior class that had 16 players wrap up their careers at Tarleton.
The 2012 squad is made up mostly of new faces and returns just one starter from last year.
Tarleton trails only Incarnate Word, the 2011 LSC regular season champions. The Cardinals got 13 first-place votes, while the Texans received one first-place vote. Cameron trails Tarleton in third, followed by Angelo State and Abilene Christian, who tied for fourth. West Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Eastern New Mexico round out the rankings.
Head coach
Bryan Conger talked about the poll.
"We are all excited for the beginning of the season and we look forward to this journey," said Conger. "We realize that every season every team is different than it was the year before and past success is only helpful if we choose to learn from it. Our goal is to simply be the best we can be at playing in the present moment one pitch at a time. Then we will take a deep breath and do it again. Everything else is irrelevant."
The Texans will open the season against McMurry on Feb. 3 at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.
