Tarleton sweeps Texas Wesleyan with strong pitching, late-inning rallies

- Box Score: Game 1

- Box Score: Game 2

STEPHENVILLE – Samantha Swanda and Randi Fentress combined for 14 innings of one-run softball Tuesday as the Tarleton offense provided just enough runs to complete the sweep of Texas Wesleyan.

Game 1: Tarleton 1, Texas Wesleyan 0

Arianna Rodriguez drove a double to the right-center gap with a full count in the bottom of the second to score Courtney Vroman and secure a victory for pitcher Samantha Swanda and the TexAnns in the afternoon opener against Texas Wesleyan Tuesday.

Swanda pitched her first complete game shutout of the season in earning the victory, throwing all seven innings allowing no runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine.

The offense, however, had its chances but wasn't able to squeak out a run until the bottom of the last inning. Tarleton left runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth and fifth inning before cracking the score column.

McKaylee Pittman led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit to center then was pulled for a pinch runner, Vroman.

After a groundout, Alex Orf was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one away.

The junior shortstop stepped into the box and worked the count full before driving a low and outside pitch to the gap.

Rodriguez and Katie Welborn recorded multi-hit games for the TexAnns while Orf, Pittman and Shelby Tinklepaugh recorded Tarleton's other base hits.

Game 2: Tarleton 2, Texas Wesleyan 1

Tarleton pinch hitters pieced together a two-out rally in the sixth to give Tarleton a 2-1 victory in support of Randi Fentress in the nightcap at Tarleton's Softball Complex Tuesday against Texas Wesleyan.

Tarleton again struggled to get anything across the board early, stranding runners on first and second in the bottom of the first and runners on the corners in the second.

Texas Wesleyan finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with a two-out, two-strike home run to left field to lead 1-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Rodriguez grooved a two-out pitch to center field for a triple. On the next pitch, however, the Wesleyan third baseman grabbed a hot line drive off the bat of Welborn to end the TexAnn threat.

Tarleton finally got on the board in the sixth when back-to-back pinch hitters Vroman and Hannah Hancock set up the TexAnns with runners on the corners and two outs.

The third pinch hitter of the inning, Kelsey Latta, drove a line drive up the box to plate Vroman and on the first pitch of the next at-bat, Pittman – the fourth pinch hitter of the inning – ripped a base hit to left to plate Marcie Rodriguez, who re-entered on first base to run for Hancock.

Leading 2-1 in the seventh, Fentress went back to the circle to finish what she started.

The sophomore pitcher got a weak pop-up to first, a pair of swinging strikeouts to seal the deal.

Fentress went the distance allowing one run on four hits while striking out nine.

The TexAnns will be in action Friday in Denton with a 4:30 p.m. matchup against Fort Hays State in the Texas Woman's Best Western Spring Fling.
