Texans hold on to beat Texas Wesleyan 9-7

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton (5-5) jumped out to an early six-run lead and held off a late-inning surge by Texas Wesleyan (12-6) to end a five-game losing streak and earn a 9-7 victory at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville Tuesday.

"I'm very proud of our kids," said head coach Bryan Conger. "They played hard and did a good job of competing. It was nice to see them continue to stick to the process and trust themselves."

Tarleton remains perfect at home this season, pushing their record to 4-0.

Texas Wesleyan got the scoring starting in the opening frame with a pair of runs on a hit and an error to lead 2-0 quickly.

The Texans rallied immediately in the bottom of the first with a two-out, two-run bomb to left field by Blake Silguero. Silguero's homer was his first of the season and plated Ethan Stuckly, who extended the inning with a walk.

Tarleton continued to pour on the offense in the next two innings.

Jonathan Schmitz led off the Tarleton second with a single up the middle and was driven home by an Evan Robinson double down the left field line two batters later. Noah Ringenberger plated Robinson with a double of his own with two away to put Tarleton up 4-2 after two.

After Texas Wesleyan stranded a two-out base runner in the top of the third, the Texans opened the flood gates with a four-run third inning.

Stuckly started the inning by taking a pitch in the foot to reach first base and Garrett Hardey kept it alive by beating out a bobble.

Schmitz singled again to load the bases and Crump drove in Stuckly with a single to left, making the score 5-2.  Robinson and Andrew Wolfe each recorded RBIs on a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly with the bases juiced before Ringenberger drove in the fourth run of the inning with an RBI rip up the middle.

Leading 8-2 after three, Texas Wesleyan took advantage of Tarleton miscues by scoring four of their own in the top of the fourth on one hit, one error, two walks a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly to cut the Tarleton lead to 8-6.

After a scoreless fifth and sixth, Texas Wesleyan pulled a little closer with an RBI groundout but Tanner Ross stopped the bleeding with a strikeout to hold the lead.

Holding a slim 8-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth, Ringenberger welcomed a new Ram pitcher by driving his second pitch over the right field wall for an insurance run and a 9-7 lead.

Britt Robertshaw came in to close it out and despite a two-out hiccup, managed to earn the save.

Taylor Christian earned the win for Tarleton while Blake Ballard took the loss.

The Texans threw nine pitchers on the day with two – Kyle Supak and Austin Coble – managing to pitch flawless innings.

Ringenberger and Schmitz recorded a three-hit game while Silguero and Robinson had two hits each. Ryan Small, Stuckly, Hardey and Crump recorded the rest of Tarleton's 14 hits. Ringenberger led the team with three RBIs while Silguero and Robinson added two each.

Tarleton will hit the road for the start of Lone Star Conference play with a 1 p.m. match-up with Eastern New Mexico in the Abilene Christian Tournament beginning Friday.
