ALLEN - With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the regular season Lone Star Conference champion Tarleton TexAnns (20-8, 17-3) have a brand new season waiting for them tomorrow.
The win-or-go-home conference postseason tournament is set to begin tomorrow and the TexAnns have three games in four days to prove that they are, indeed, the 'queens of the conference.'
In the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament at the Allen Event Center, the TexAnns will play Eastern New Mexico for the first time in NCAA postseason history and the TexAnns are looking to carry momentum from their last battle against the Zias - a 73-48 Tarleton win in Stephenville.
The TexAnns got the better of Eastern on both regular season occasions, including a 78-70 win in Portales, N.M. to notch TexAnn head coach Ronnie Hearne his 1000th career victory.
In the last meeting, Tarleton dominated from the get-go and never looked back as the Adamson sisters led the TexAnns to victory with 12 points each. Morgan Stehling (11) and Kiara Wright (10) also cracked double figures in the last meeting.
Eastern New Mexico managed to rally from a 3-8 start to LSC play by winning six of the final 10 games to earn the No. 8 berth.
The Zias are led in scoring by Precious Herrin with 16.1 points per game and Kiara Tate with 11.3 per contest. Tate burned the TexAnns with her biggest performance of the season in Portales Jan. 4 with a 40-point effort.
Tarleton is led by a trio of double-figure scorers: Shelby Adamson (13.9), Peyton Adamson (13.5) and Kiara Wright (12.7). Wright is also one of just two players in the LSC to average a double-double for the regular season with 10.2 rebounds per game. The other player is LSC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Sabelle Diata of Cameron.
The TexAnns are 23-12 all-time against Eastern New Mexico and 1-0 against the Zias on neutral ground with the neutral win coming in the first meeting - 78-56 on Dec. 5, 1980.
These teams have never met in the postseason at the NCAA level.
The winner of this game will advance to the semi-finals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of Cameron/Angelo State.
