TexAnns belt five home runs but fall to Cameron in series finale

- Box Score

LAWTON, Okla. – On an afternoon when home runs ruled the day, Tarleton (25-10, 10-2) allowed five unanswered runs over the last two innings in Sunday's 8-6 series finale loss to Cameron (13-18, 4-8).

Despite the loss, Tarleton won its fourth straight conference series by sweeping yesterday's doubleheader and remain in a first-place tie with No. 2 Angelo State atop the LSC standings.

Tarleton got the scoring started in the top of the first with a solo home run to left field by Arianna Rodriguez to give the TexAnns a 1-0 lead just two batters into the game.

After a solo shot by Cameron in the second tied the game at 1-1, Tarleton responded with back-to-back bombs by Rodriguez and Welborn to put the TexAnns on top 3-1. The lead would not withstand as Cameron answered with a 2-run home run in the ensuing half-inning to tie it at 3-3.

The longball-fest continued in the next inning as Abigail Tammen jumped on the home run bandwagon with a two-run job to left field to plate Shelby Tinklepaugh, who pinch ran for Bailee Mauldin.

Rodriguez added her third home run of the day in the fifth to put Tarleton up 6-3. She became just the second TexAnn in school history to hit three homers in a game, joining Brittnee Rice who hit three on March 21, 2009 against Eastern New Mexico.

Cameron score the only non-longball runs of the day with a sac fly and an RBI double in the sixth to pull within one and then Tarleton surrendered a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to fall 8-6.

Rodriguez led the way for Tarleton with her first career three-homer game, going 3-4 at the dish with three bombs, three runs and three RBIs. Welborn also had a multi-hit game, including a homer. Tammen's home run was the fifth TexAnn jack of the day and one of eighth total homers hit on the afternoon.

The five home runs are a TexAnn record, topping the previous record of four which was set on eight different occasions.

Mauldin and Amber Sotelo also had a double each for Tarleton.

Samantha Swanda pitched 6.2 innings allowing six runs – five earned – on six hits and one walk while striking out seven. Randi Fentress took the loss, allowing one walk, one hit and two runs.

Tarleton returns home Friday for a doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico at 5 p.m.
