STEPHENVILLE - The Tarleton baseball team will face No. 1 St. Mary's for the second time this season when they host the Rattlers at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.
The Texans are 12-9 overall this season and 5-3 in Lone Star Conference play. They are coming off a tough series against LSC leading West Texas A&M in which the Buffs took three of four. Tarleton did manage to hand WT their first shutout of the season though.
Earlier this season, the Texans and Rattlers met in San Antonio with the host St. Mary's squad taking an 8-2 victory.
As a team, Tarleton is hitting for a .281 average with a .386 slugging percentage and a .381 on-base percentage. The Texans also have 30 doubles, seven triples and eight home runs on the season.
Ethan Stuckly leads the way with a .420 mark, 14 RBI's and eight extra-base hits. Andy Wolfe has contributed a .377 average and 15 RBI's, while
Ryan Small has added a.307 average, 20 runs and 12 RBI's.
Garrett Hardey has been a headached on the base paths for opposing teams with a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts. In Tarleton's last game, the senior first baseman tied a school record with four stolen bases in a single game. The Texans supplement that with a .949 fielding percentage on the defense side of the field.
The Texan pitching staff was effective for the most part against a dominant West Texas offense this past weekend, and now has a combined ERA of 4.02. Through 170 innings of work, Tarleton has 146 strikeouts to 79 walks and 173 hits.
Pete Perez got his third LSC Pitcher of the Week award after recording a complete game shutout against the Buffs. On the season, Perez has a 0.97 ERA, a 4-1 record, three complete games, two shutouts and 37 strikeouts, all of which are team highs.
Matt Buckmaster has added a 3-1 record and a 3.08 ERA while
Britt Robertshaw has a 1.08 ERA and two saves.
St. Mary's has overcome a couple of tough losses this year and is now 25-5 overall and atop the Collegiate Baseball rankings. At No. 1 in the nation, the Rattlers are 19-2 in conference play, but 8-4 on the road.
Overall, they record a .290 average, a .416 slugging percentage and a .383 on-base percentage. Billy Richard leads the team with a .383 average, 41 hits and 36 runs scored. M.P. Cokinos has had a mosters season with a team-high 36 RBI's and 14 extra-base hits.
Despite a dangerous offense, St. Mary's real strength has been the pitching staff. The Rattlers have a 2.14 ERA with 244 strikeouts, which are No. 3 and 2 in the nation respectively. They have combined for 10 shutouts and seven complete games. Carl O'Neal is in the running for DII pitcher of the year with an 8-0 start, 0.53 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings. He also has five complete games and four shutouts. Right behind O'Neal is Rene Solis, who has a 1.98 ERA, 7-1 record and 56 strikeouts.
Wednesday's match-up should be an exciting non-conference showdown between two team's very familiar with eachother.
