STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton (27-10, 12-2) survived a pitcher's duel and exploded for a run-rule victory to sweep Friday's doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico (7-27, 1-13) and earn its fifth straight conference series victory.
Game 1: Tarleton 2, Eastern New Mexico 1
Tarleton's
Abigail Tammen drove in a pair of runs to provide the TexAnns' only offense in the series opener as they survived a 2-1 pitcher's duel against the Zias.
Samantha Swanda dominated over the first three frames, keeping the Zias out of the hit column their first time through the lineup.
Tarleton managed three baserunners over the first two innings but couldn't capitalize as one was doubled off and the other two were left stranded on first and second as Amy Smith kept the Zias in the game from the circle.
Eastern got its first hit to lead off the fourth inning, but Swanda stranded her at third to escape the trouble.
The TexAnns also had something cooking in the fourth when
Katie Welborn led off the inning with a walk and Swanda laced a double to left center, which moved Welborn's pinch runner
Eryn Freitas to third with no one out.
After a Smith got the first out the inning, Tammen got her first RBI of the game with a line drive to center field to plate Freitas and move Swanda to third with one away.
With runners on second and third following a Tammen steal, Eastern escaped the trouble when
Kelsey Latta ripped a liner right at the shortstop, which dropped the ball and caught Swanda between third and home. A foul out ended the threat for Tarleton.
Tarleton added some much needed insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Tammen drove in Swanda with a sacrifice fly to right to plate Swanda, who led off the inning with a single.
Despite an unearned run coming across in the top of the seventh to deny Swanda the shutout, the senior hurler earned her 14
th win of the season with seven innings of two-hit ball, no walks and six strikeouts.
Tarleton managed five hits in the game with two coming from Swanda and two from Tammen.
Amber Sotelo had the other with a single to left in the fifth.
Game 2: Tarleton 9, Eastern New Mexico 1 (5 innings)
Tarleton slugged three home runs to complete its fifth straight conference series victory by run-ruling Eastern New Mexico 9-1 in five innings.
Eastern New Mexico had its best scoring chance to that point in the day with two hits in the top of the first, but Tarleton pitcher
Randi Fentress escaped a bases loaded jam by getting the Zia five-hole hitter to foul out to the catcher, Sotelo.
When Tarleton got the plate, the TexAnns poured on the offense.
Alex Orf led off the game with a single and after
Arianna Rodriguez reached on an error,
Katie Welborn struck for her 11
th homer of the season with a three-run blast over the left-center wall.
After a walk to Swanda,
Bailee Mauldin added a deep bomb to dead center field to plate Swanda's pinch runner
Brittney Sharp and give Tarleton a 5-0 lead. Tammen scored the sixth TexAnn run of the inning later when she stole home on a double steal following her double and an error.
The Zias struck for one in the top of the third when pitcher Katie Ramsey sent one over the outfield wall for a solo shot to bring cut into the lead, 6-1.
Tarleton got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Orf sent a deep fly ball to left field to plate Tammen from third with two away. Eastern managed to escape the inning with no more damage as Tarleton led 7-1.
In the next Tarleton frame, Swanda got a hold of a Ramsey pitch and sent it over the left center wall for a solo bomb and an 8-1 TexAnn lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Latta reached on a Zia error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt to put the potential game-ending run just two bases away.
After a strikeout, Orf laced a single to left field which the left fielder misplayed, allowing Latta to score and bring the game to a close.
Fentress earned the win going all five innings with four hits and one run on three walks and a strikeout.
Tarleton belted three home runs, including two in the first inning by
Katie Welborn (three-run) and
Bailee Mauldin (two-run). Swanda had a solo blast in the fourth inning.
The TexAnns will go for their third LSC sweep of the season Saturday with a 12 p.m. game against the Zias.
