Texans, TexAnns find success in season opening track & field meet

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton claimed the top honors in four events as the Texans and TexAnns found success in the season opening meet at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville Tuesday.
 
The meet began with field events and Tarleton's Nikki McNorton highlighted the event by claiming a win in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.73 meters, finishing .05m higher than the runner-up.  That was a provisional qualifying mark.
 
Leslie Jordan was also a key contributor in the field events, taking second in shot put (13.28m), second in discus (37.34m), and second in hammer (41.68m). Kallie Johanson finished fifth in discus with a toss of 34.80m.
 
Meanwhile, the men were also competing in the early field events.
 
Cyler Matlock took second in the high jump with a leap of 1.90m while Hayden Eubanks finished third in the discus with a 46.40m throw for Tarleton's only two top five men's field finishes.
 
When the running events began, Tarleton found even more success.
 
TexAnn runner Lindsey Hinton won the 5000m run with a time of 17:47.80 while Cordell Valentine (10.59) won the 100m dash and Brian Cooper (2:00.55) won the men's 800m.
 
Other key runners for the TexAnns were Claire Goodman (1:00.80) who won her heat in the 400m dash and finished fifth overall while Diamond Wilson came in eighth overall (1:02.84) in the same event.
 
Payton Shoush (2:24.16) finished second in the flight of the 800m run and second overall while Kyndall Trnka (2:31.07) placed third in her flight and Morgan Reed (2:33.42) finished fourth in the flight and 11th overall of the same event.
 
In the women's 1500m, Karen Ramming (5:05.54) finished seventh overall while Ashley Husbands (5:12.34) and Hillari Raemsch (5:19.10) finished one and two of the flight and 11th and 12th overall.
 
The TexAnn 4x400m relay team of Shabrina McAdams, Shelby Terry, Reed and Shoush earned the second spot in their flight and seventh overall with a time of 4:13.39 while the group of Goodman, Wilson, Jenna Duncan and Paige Klein took third overall with a time of 4:04.73.
 
The men had eight runners compete in the 100m dash with Valentine earning the win.
 
Marquis Thompson (11.35), Travis Montgomery (10.80), Gabriel Castillo (10.90), LeThaddeus Hill (11.14), Nick Daniels (11.38), Phillip Hayes (10.79) and Jamal Mays (10.79) also competed in the event.
