Swanda passes Rice on all-time TexAnn HR list, but Tarleton swept by MSU

- Box Score: Game 1

- Box Score: Game 2

WICHITA FALLS – Tarleton committed three errors over two games, including one that led to a Midwestern State walk-off, as the Mustangs (18-20, 8-10) swept the TexAnns (28-13, 13-5) to hand Tarleton its first conference series loss of the season.

“It's a shame that we picked a road series with a team who has their back against the wall to not bring our full focus and defensive intensity,” said head coach Julie Mata. “We just made way too many crucial mistakes.”

On a brighter note for Tarleton, Samantha Swanda became Tarleton's two-year career home run leader (29) with three home runs on the afternoon - passing Brittnee Rice's total of 27.

Game 1: Midwestern State 7, Tarleton 6

A throwing error with one away in the bottom of the seventh allowed the game-winning run to score from second and sink Tarleton in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The TexAnns got the scoring started in the game when Alex Orf led off the game with a double to left center and came around to score on a one-out, RBI single by Samantha Swanda.

After a sacrifice fly by MSU tied the game at 1-1, Arianna Rodriguez put the TexAnns back on top with a double down the left field line to plate Kelsey Latta, who led off the inning with a walk. After a walk to Katie Welborn, Tarleton stranded the bases loaded but led 2-1.

MSU tied the game again in the third with an RBI double, but Tarleton rallied to take the lead back in the fifth.

Swanda led off the top of the fifth with a solo shot to right field for her 13th home run of the season, tying her with Brittnee Rice for the Tarleton career mark for home runs in a two-year career.

Tarleton added one more run in the inning when Courtney Vroman drove in Abigail Tammen for a 4-2 TexAnn lead. Tammen reached on an MSU error, making her run unearned.

Midwestern took the lead on a grand slam in the next inning to lead 6-4 after five.

In the top of the sixth, Swanda struck again – this time for a two-run home run to left field – to tie the game at 6-6. That long ball made Swanda the all-time home run leader among two-year players in Tarleton's history with 28. She is now one shy of tying Rodriguez and three shy of tying Alicia Petersma for the No. 1 spot in Tarleton's all-time home run list.

With the game tied, Midwestern led off the seventh with a flyout but came back with a walk and a bunt single before the game-ending error.

Kirby Crow took the loss, allowing one run – not earned – on one hit and one walk in one inning of relief. Randi Fentress was the starter and went 5.1 innings allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks.

Swanda was 3-4 at the plate with four RBIs while Amber Sotelo also had a three-hit game. Rodriguez recorded a multi-hit game as well with a single and a double.

Game 2: Midwestern State 6, Tarleton 5

While trying to salvage the series finale, Tarleton came out swinging with a four-spot in the first inning but faltered in the later innings as Midwestern walked off again with a 6-5 victory Saturday afternoon.

After three of the first four batters reached to lead off the game, Tammen got Tarleton on the board with an RBI single up the middle to score Orf. Tarleton went station-to-station as they poured on the runs with RBI singles by Latta and McKaylee Pittman and an RBI groundout by Bailee Mauldin to lead 4-0 after one.

Samantha Swanda came out dealing over the first three innings, but ran into some trouble in the fourth when MSU struck for three unearned runs. With two away, a throwing error from the outfield allowed one run to score and later cost Tarleton two more runs when MSU cashed in a two-RBI single.

Swanda put Tarleton on top in the fifth with her third home run of the day, 15th home run of the season and 29th of her Tarleton career.

MSU answered right back with a two-out, RBI single up the middle to cut the Tarleton lead to 5-4

In the bottom of the seventh, MSU led off the inning with a home run to knot the score and eventually walked off with an RBI triple to complete the sweep.

Swanda pitched 6.2 innings allowing six runs – five earned – on 11 hits and two walks while striking out four.

Swanda and Pittman each had a pair of hits while Tammen and Latta had the other two of Tarleton's six hits.

Tarleton will hit the road Tuesday for a doubleheader with Texas Woman's in Denton beginning at 4 p.m.
