Texans advance to LSC Championship with 3-2 win over ACU

- Box Score

SAN ANGELO – The Tarleton baseball team defeated Abilene Christian 3-2 in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon in San Angelo.

An exhausted Texan squad managed to rally from a 2-1 hole and won by one run, putting themselves in a championship showdown with host Angelo State.

Landon Thompson opened up the scoring in the second with an RBI single to left, plating Jonathan Schmitz.

ACU countered with a pair of runs in the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead.

Andy Wolfe tied the game up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly, which scored Ty Crump.

Heading into the later stages of the game, the Texans needed to something to gain momentum.

Thompson singled to lead off the seventh, before Chris Patton sacrificed him to second.  A single to center by Evan Robinson put Thompson in scoring position with nobody out.  That is when Ryan Small stepped up and ripped a deep fly ball to left, which gave Thompson enough time to tag and score from third.

That would give Tarleton the lead as the bullpen held off the Wildcats for a 3-2 final.

Austin Coble got the start for the Texans and was huge in keeping the rotation rested for a possible trip to the finals.  The junior gave up just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work.  Britt Robertshaw (3-2) tossed three no-hit, shutout innings in relief to close out the game and pick up the win.

Schmitz, Thompson and Crump all had two-hit games for Tarleton and all scored a run in the victory.

Brady Rodriguez (3-2) suffered the loss for ACU after giving up three runs on nine hits in seven innings.

Tarleton and Angelo State will now face off in the LSC Tournament Championships at 6 p.m. Tuesday in San Angelo.  Live stats and live video can be found at LoneStarConference.org while the live radio is provided by KSTV 93.1 FM.
