Texans' title hopes end with 6-0 loss in LSC Tournament Championship

- Box Score

SAN ANGELO – The Tarleton baseball team competed in their fifth Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship, but came up just short with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of No. 12 Angelo State Wednesday in San Angelo.

The Texans were the surprise story of the tournament, upsetting a number of higher-seeded opponents to make it to the if-necessary title game against the Rams.  They also won 11 of their past 12 games entering the final contest.

ASU got off to a fast start with five runs in the top of the second inning.  The Rams went on to add another run in the top of the third.  That would be all the scoring the hosts would need to upend a scoreless Tarleton squad.

In the end, the host Rams proved to be too much for the Texans as Angelo State took the regular season and tournament titles in the LSC.

Matt Buckmaster (6-2) went all nine innings for the Texans and only had the one inning tarnishing what was otherwise a productive day.  Besides the second, he allowed just one run on seven hits the rest of the game.

Landon Thompson and Andy Wolfe both finished the game 2-for-4 to lead the Texan offense, but Tarleton left seven runners stranded in the game.

Tarleton starting pitcher Pete Perez, catcher Jonathan Schmitz, outfielder Andy Wolfe and second baseman Ryan Small were all named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the six-game stretch.  The Texans would have liked to take home the trophy, but at 30-21 head coach Bryan Conger has to be happy about the way his players performed this postseason.

Tarleton has an outside chance of still making the NCAA South Central Regionals as an at-large team, but it will be up to the committee to determine the Texans' fate at a later date.
