ABILENE – Tarleton (8-4, 3-1) swept Abilene Christian (4-7, 1-2) at Moody Coliseum Friday night to earn its first win over the Wildcats since 2008 and the first win against ACU in Abilene since 1998.
This win ended a five-game losing streak to the Wildcats and was just the ninth win in the history of the series for the TexAnns, in addition to being Tarleton's fifth sweep of the season – all of which have been their last five wins.
The TexAnns earned a hard fought battle in the first set, taking the game 26-24 despite being out-hit by the Wildcats .158 to .163. The TexAnns landed 12 kills on 38 attacks while committing just six errors while ACU committed nine errors and 16 kills on 43 attacks.
Both teams went on the offensive in the second set, but the TexAnns prevailed 25-19 on the strength of a .316 hitting percentage compared to just .225 for the Wildcats.
In the final set, Tarleton committed just two errors to ACU's 11 en route to a 25-22 win.
Nikki McNorton led the TexAnns with 11 kills and led all hitters with a .524 hitting percentage.
Kelsey Raglin added nine kills while
Katie Covell chipped in seven kills.
Danielle Barker led the team with 15 assists while
Macie Walker added 12 of her own.
Emily Klein (15) and Raglin (12) cracked double figures in digs.
Over their last six games, Tarleton has won 18 of its 22 sets and have won six of their last seven games and are off to their best conference start since the 2008 season.
The TexAnns return home for a Tuesday night match against Incarnate Word at 7 p.m.
