FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Karla Martinez was undefeated in singles play as the TexAnns won 23 of 36 matches at the Colorado State women's tennis invitational.
“Overall, I thought everyone was much more improved and we played well,” said head coach
Lance Drake. “The air (in Colorado) is much thinner - which was a little frustrating - and that forced us to make some adjustments the first day, but the girls played hard and I was excited at how well we competed.”
Tarleton competed against Division I foes Colorado State and Northern Colorado as well as Colorado State-Pueblo and Colorado Mesa. CSU-Pueblo and Colorado Mesa belong to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, which currently makes them in-region foes for Tarleton. CMU finished last season as the No. 2 team in the region.
Martinez swept her three singles matches by defeating players from CMU (6-1, 6-3) Friday, CSUP (6-0, 6-0) Saturday and UNC (6-1, 6-2) while Zecevic went two out of three in her matches, falling to NCU (6-1, 6-1) before winning against CSU (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) and CMU (6-2, 6-3).
Alicia Perez competed against both D1 opponents as well as CMU and finished her singles weekend at 2-1 with wins over UNC (7-6, 6-2) and CMU (6-0, 6-1). Her only loss of the weekend came against the tournament host, Colorado State on Saturday 7-5, 6-1.
Melanie Barnes dropped her first match to Colorado State Friday 6-1, 7-5, but rebounded with wins over CSU-Pueblo (6-1, 6-0) and UNC (6-3, 6-4) Saturday and Sunday while Mackenzie Mitchell finished with a similar weekend falling to CSU (6-0, 6-2) Friday and beating CSU-Pueblo (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) and CMU (6-3, 6-1) Saturday and Sunday.
Marina Rull won her Friday and Sunday singles against CSU-Pueblo (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) and CMU (6-2, 6-3), respectively, while
Silvia Nieva also won two of three with wins over CMU (6-3, 6-2) and CSU-Pueblo (6-3, 6-3) Friday and Saturday.
April Downing won her only match of the weekend Friday with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Colorado State-Pueblo before dropping hard fought matches against CSU Saturday and Sunday.
In doubles play, the combination of Perez and Martinez defeated CSU and CMU 9-8 and 8-2, respectively, before dropping their final match of the weekend to UNC in a hard fought 8-6 battle.
Barnes and Rull dominated CSU-Pueblo 8-3 on Friday and CMU 8-1 on Sunday while falling to UNC 8-3 Saturday. Zecevic and Mitchell also won two of their three matches with an 8-5 win over CSU-Pueblo Friday and 8-4 over CMU 8-4 with an 8-2 loss to CSU in their last match. Nieva and Downing won their final match against CSU-Pueblo 8-3.
This was Tarleton's last invitational tournament before the ITA South Central Regional Tournament, which begins Sept. 29.
