PORTALES, N.M. – Tarleton (11-4, 6-1) won its 10
th straight match against Eastern New Mexico (5-10, 1-5) and pushed their current season winning streak to four with a four-set win over the Zias Saturday night.
After the teams opened the game in a 5-5 tie, a
Meg Umbel block started a 5-0 Tarleton run to put the TexAnns on top 10-5. The TexAnns maintained a five-point lead until a 5-1 run at the 19-15 mark allowed the Zias to knot the score late at 20-20.
Eastern took a 22-20 lead before a service error gave a point and the serve back to Tarleton. Kaylea eck immediately took advantage with three straight points on the strength of a service ace and kills by
Danielle Barker and
Nikki McNorton.
After an ENMU kill, McNorton ended the set in Tarleton's favor with a kill shot to take the game 25-23.
In the second set, Eastern New Mexico maintained an early lead with as much as a four-point lead at 11-7. The Eastern run was ended with a McNorton kill that sparked a 5-1 Tarleton run to tie the set at 12-12.
The teams stayed neck-and-neck through 18-18 before a service error and three Zia errors helped Tarleton to a 5-1 run and a 23-19 lead. Two more Zia errors gave Tarleton the second-set win at 25-20.
In the third set, Eastern built a small lead early before eventually going on top 15-9 after a 7-0 run following the 9-8 mark. Tarleton rallied but only scored five more times over the rest of the set as the Zias took game three 25-14.
Tarleton dominated the fourth set from the get-go with an 11-5 lead after big service runs by McNorton and
Emily Klein.
Eastern climbed to within four points of the TexAnn lead at 20-16 but Tarleton responded with a
Kelsey Raglin kill that sparked a 5-2 run to give Tarleton the set and the match.
McNorton had 10 kills and eight blocks for the TexAnns while
Katie Covell just missed a double-double with nine kills and 16 digs. Umbel and
Stacie Murrah added eight and seven kills, respectively.
Barker did post a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs while Klein led the team with 21 digs.
Tarleton will return home for a Tuesday night match with No. 11 Angelo State at 7 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
