Men's Basketball Preview: at Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO - The Tarleton Texans (8-2, 2-1 LSC) make its first road trip in over a month as the team travels to San Antonio this Saturday, Jan. 5, to face the Incarnate Word Cardinals (6-5, 2-1 LSC). Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside the McDermott Center on the UIW campus.
 
QUICK HITS
• The Texans picked up its fourth-consecutive win with a 52-46 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville (5-6, 1-2 LSC) in Stephenville on Wednesday.
• The 46 points that Tarleton gave up tied a season-low for opposing teams, after UT-Permian Basin was limited to 46 points as well back on Nov. 16.
• The victory moved the Texans to 2-1 in the Lone Star Conference and enter Saturday's contest in a three-way tie for second place.
• The Texans have the league's longest current win streak having won four-straight heading into the weekend.
• The Cardinals are coming off an 86-75 win over A&M-Commerce in Commerce on Wednesday.
• The Cardinals, despite averaging less than 75 points a game, have scored at least 80 points or more in five of its 11 games this season.
• UIW leads the LSC in three different categories, including field goal percentage (.488), blocked shots (4.8) and steal (10.0).
 
SERIES HISTORY
• The Texans and Cardinals will meet up for just the 18th time in the series, which dates back to 1984.
• UIW currently leads the series 9-8 and won the last meeting between the two teams, 62-51, in San Antonio.
• Since the Cardinals joined the Lone Star Conference, the margin of victory between the two teams has just been 7.75 points. Tarleton has won three of those four meetings.
 
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
• Head coach Ken Burmeister is in his seventh season with the Cardinals and brings in an overall record of 119-61 from UIW.
• Burmeister now has 16 years of head coaching experience. Prior to his taking over the Cardinal basketball program Burmeister coached at UT-San Antonio, Loyla Chicago and Trinity. The coach had taken a seven-year hiatus from basketball before returning to the court when accepting the UIW job.
• UIW went 16-11 overall in 2011-12, while going 11-7 in LSC play. The Cardinals earned the No. 4 seed in the LSC Championship Tournament, but was upset by No. 5-seeded Cameron 77-68 in overtime.
• The Cardinals rank third in the league averaging 74.8 points per game. UIW has six different players averaging double-figures for the season.
• UIW is shooting a league-best .488 from the field, .681 from the charity stripe, and .325 from downtown.
• The Cardinals average less than 30 rebounds per contest and are being out-rebounded by opponents by a little more than seven rebounds per game.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
• The Tarleton Texans are 325-57 (.851) overall when playing inside the friendly confines of Wisdom Gym under head coach Lonn Reisman.
• The Texans have posted a record of 199-24 (.892) at home under Reisman since the year 2000.
• Since joining NCAA Division II, Tarleton is 252-43 (.854) all-time at home.
 
TEXANS PICKING UP THE “D”
• Tarleton headed into it's game at Angelo State ranked 219th in the nation in field goal percentage-defense, allowing opposing teams to shoot 45.5 percent from the floor.
• Following its game with the Rams and a home game against ACU, the Texans moved to 110th in the nation allowing opponents to just 41.7 percent shooting from the field.
• Since the last NCAA rankings came out on Dec. 16, Tarleton ranked 104th.
 
MORE DEFENSE FOR THE TEXANS
• The Texans ranked 46th in the nation in scoring defense when the NCAA released its first set of national rankings back on Dec. 2, allowing opponents to score 62.4 points per contest.
• Tarleton ranked 22nd in the nation in scoring defense on Dec. 16, allowing opponents to score just 59.9 points per contest.
• The Texans head into Saturday's contest at Incarnate Word now giving up just 58.5 points per outing.
 
PEGUES NOTCHES NEW CAREER HIGH
• A'Darius Pegues (F, Jr, Louisville, Ky.) scored a career-high 12 points in Tarleton's 64-53 win over Henderson State back on Dec. 18.
• The big man upped that career-high by a point on Wednesday, scoring a new career-high 13 points in Tarleton's 52-46 win.
• He had 11 points at the break, going 5-for-7 from the field over the first 20 minutes.
 
UPCHURCH KEEPS SCORING
De'Andre Upchurch (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) scored double-figures for the eighth time this season with 10 points in Tarleton's 52-46 win over TAMUK.
• Upchurch, despite not starting a game for the Texans, is second on the team with an 11.4 points per game average.
 
BLOCK THIS, WITH CATHEY-MACKLIN
Jon Cathey-Macklin (F, Jr, Milwaukee, Wis.) tied a career-high with a three-block game on Wednesday. It is the second time  this season that Cathey-Macklin has three rejected shots in one game.
• Cathey-Macklin currently leads the team with 14 blocks this season and is also tied for the league lead with 1.4 blocks per game.
 
CHUCK-ING IT FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) was smooth as silk from the free throw line on Wednesday, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe... in the final 10 seconds of the game.
• Guy, who came into the game shooting just 63.6 percent from the line, but with the game on the line he drained all six shots in the waining moments of the game.
 
CARTER CONTINUES TO LEAD LSC
Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) leads the league in field goal percentage shooting 86.0 percent from the floor over the course of the first 10 games this season.
• Carter is shooting .135 points better than WTAMU's Donald Sims, who currently ranks second in the LSC with a 72.5 shooting percentage.
 
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
• When the newest national statistical rankings came out on Dec. 16, Tarleton ranked in the top-100 in six different categories.
• The Texans ranked 22nd in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score just 59.9 points a game.
• Tarleton ranked 30th in personal fouls, averaging 15.7 fouls per contest. The Texans ranked 88th in turnovers, giving up just 14.1 turnovers per game.
• Tarleton ranks 52nd in rebounding margin (+6.0) and 68th in blocked shots (3.9).
• The Texans are shooting 46.4 percent from the field, which ranks 82nd in the nation.
 
HOW THE LSC IS STACKING UP SO FAR
• The Texans were picked to win the LSC. Tarleton currently sits in a tie for second-place in the conference at 2-1.
• MSU, who was picked to finish second, leads the league with a 4-0 mark in conference games. A&M-Commerce - picked to finish ninth - is currently in a tie for second-place with the Texans and UIW at 2-1.
• WTAMU's Donald Sims was named the LSC's Preseason Player of the Year; he currently ranks 5th in scoring (14.5 ppg), first in rebounds (8.2 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.725).
 
OPENING UP THE LSC SCHEDULE
• Tarleton dropped its LSC opener for the first time since Jan. 14, 2009 with its five-point loss to Angelo State on Wednesday.
• The Texans are now 12-7 in LSC openers since joining the league in 1994.
• Tarleton moved to 2-2 all-time when opening up LSC play against ASU.
 
TEXANS PICKED TO WIN LSC
• The Texans were selected to defend its LSC Championship, earning the No. 1 ranking in the preseason poll released by the league office on Oct. 25, 2012.
• Tarleton received 12 of a possible 29 first-place votes in the poll.
• Midwestern State received 12 first-place votes in the poll as well, but Tarleton took the top spot earning 269 total points to MSU's 262.
 
TEXANS DEBUT 2012-13 SEASON AT NO. 17 IN NABC PRESEASON POLL
• The Texans finished the 2011-12 campaign at No. 9 in the nation and head into the new season at No. 17 according to a preseason poll released by the NABC on Nov. 2.
• Tarleton was the highest ranked LSC team in the preseason poll. MSU debuts at No. 23 in 2012-13 after finishing No. 5 last season.
• Including the 2012-13 campaign, Tarleton has been preseason ranked inside the top-25 seven times.
 
TARLETON IN SEASON-OPENERS
• Tarleton snapped a 10-game winning streak in season openers after falling 73-60 to Southwestern Assemblies of God in the 2012-13 opening game. Tarleton fell to 21-4 in season-openers under coach Reisman.
• Tarleton's last loss in a season-opener had come back in 2001 against Wingate (73-83).
 
REISMAN AMONG WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES IN NATION
Lonn Reisman entered the 2012-13 season with a .702 winning percentage, which ranks 12th overall among active coaches in NCAA Division II.
• Reisman's .702 winning percentage ranks 26th overall among active coaches in both NCAA Division I and II.
 
TEXANS RANKED NO. 1 IN DEFENSE LAST SEASON
• The Texans finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in scoring defense for a second-straight year after allowing opponents to just 56.3 points per game in 2012-13. The Texans allowed just 53.3 points to finish no. 1 in 2010-11.
 
UP NEXT
• The Texans make a return trip to Wisdom Gym next Wednesday, Jan. 9, to face Cameron in Lone Star Conference action.
• Wednesday's contest will be the only home game for the Texans until Jan. 19, when the team hosts West Texas A&M.
• Tip-off between the Texans and Aggies is set for 8 p.m. inside Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.
