PHOENIX, Ariz. - No. 28 Tarleton finished the Grand Canyon Invitational Tournament by going 1-2 in the final two days, including an 8-1 victory over Montana State-Billings in the tourney finale.

After being swept by Fresno Pacific on Friday, the TexAnns dropped a tight contest 4-5 to Point Loma Nazarene.

The TexAnns opened against Point Loma by taking two of three in doubles play. Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez won the No. 1 match 8-1 while Ivana Zecevic and Melanie Barnes paired up to win the No. 2 match 8-3. Makenzie Mitchell and Silvia Nieva dropped the third match 6-8.

In singles, Perez and Barnes won their respective matches in the No. 1 and No. 4 spots 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2 while the rest of the TexAnns fell in singles play. Martinez (2-6, 6-4, 5-10), Zecevic (6-2, 4-6, 10-5) and Mitchell (3-6, 6-0, 7-10) all fell in super-tiebreakers.

"This was a disappointing loss for us," said head coach Lance Drake. "We were in control of the match and we let it slip away. We have to play with more confidence to put teams like this away."

In the tournament finale, Tarleton handed Montana State-Billings an 8-1 defeat.

Tarleton swept doubles play on victories from Perez and Martinez (8-5), Zecevic and Barnes (8-1) and Nieva and April Downing (8-4).

Perez (6-3, 6-1), Martinez (6-3, 6-0) and Barnes (6-0, 6-0) dominated the top three matches. While Mitchell suffered a defeat in the No. 4 match, Nieva (6-1, 6-1) and Downing (6-0, 3-6, 12-10) handled their business in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.

Tarleton will be off this week before returning to action in Arkadelphia, Arkansas at the Ouachita Baptist Quad Feb. 22 and 23.
