Buckmaster fans 12, Texans down Cardinals 4-1

Texans move onto second round and will face loser of WT/ASU game

Matt Buckmaster (Right) moved to 9-2 on the season with his complete game win over UIW on Friday.
Box Score CANYON, TexasMatt Buckmaster struck out a career-high 12 batters and guided the No. 18-ranked Tarleton Texans to a 4-1 win over Incarnate Word in the first game of the 2013 Lone Star Conference Baseball Championships at Wilder Park in Canyon on Friday.

The Texans (33-14-1) jumped on UIW starting pitcher Alexis Garza in the first inning, scoring four runs on five hits and Buckmaster did the rest as he limited the Cardinals (26-25) to just one run on five hits in his sixth complete game of the season.

Buckmaster (W, 9-2) walked two of the first three batters he faced in the first inning, but he got out of the jam when UIW's John Pena grounded out into a double play and end the Cardinals threat.

The Texan offense kept the momentum going as Nico Moran singled through the right side of the infield and then moved to second with his 15th stolen base of the season. Rustin Thomas caught the UIW infield off guard and reached first base on a bunt and Moran moved over to third. Ryan Small looked to be sacrificing when he came up to bunt, but the UIW first baseman picked up the ball and decided to try and get Moran out at third. Moran quickly went home after the throw over to third and side-stepped the catcher's tag to score Tarleton's first run.

Colten Boothe then drove in both runners home with his triple to right field to give the Texans a 3-0 lead and Fola Lajide later made it a 4-0 game when he scored on a RBI-single from Luke Slentz. Slentz's single up the middle pushed his hitting streak to nine games, which currently leads the team.

Buckmaster gave up his lone run in the top of the third inning when Zac Russell homered to left field, but 11 strikeouts later he and the Texans found themselves with a three-run victory and moving onto play the loser of tonight's West Texas A&M/Angelo State game tomorrow.

The Texans will play either the Buffs or Rams at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and the game will be broadcast live on Hard Country KEQX-FM (89.7) for those listening in the Stephenville area. The game will also be webcast at www.foxsportssouthwest.com.
