Tarleton sends West Alabama packing with 37-point loss

- Box Score

STEPHENVILLE – The No. 12 Texans and the Tigers faced off for the first time in either schools' history and Tarleton handed West Alabama a 37-point loss.

Tarleton got off to a fast start unlike last Thursday's game against Jarvis Christian.  The Texans took a 9-0 lead through the first three minutes of play before the Tigers were finally able to manage a bucket.

The seven point lead was quickly turned into a 20-6 lead over the next several minutes.

From the 15:20 mark when Tarleton led 12-2 for the rest of the game, the Texans led by double digits for the rest of the game.

Tarleton pulled ahead by 20 points at the 5:07 mark on a Shedrick Haynes jumper from the top of the key.

By halftime, the Texans led 34-14 and went into the break with all the momentum in their favor.

Through the first 20 minutes of play, Tarleton shot 48 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc.  The Texans held the Tigers to a miserable 25 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from the three-point line.

West Alabama did not attempt a free throw in the first half.

Shedrick Haynes led the way in the first half with nine points and four assists, while Fabian Wilson added eight points and Chris Harrell added six points.

Alquan Mendenhall was West Alabama's leading scorer with just six points.

The second half was pretty much identical to the first half with the Texans enjoying a large lead.

Tarleton started the second half with a pair of three's from Brian Word and Harrell.

Ahead by 26-points, it was up to the Texans to burn the clock and maintain their advantage.  West Alabama never got within 20-points again of Tarleton, who lead by as much as 37 in the second half at the 3:00 mark off a Zach Nelson three pointer.

The Tigers were out-matched and out-played by a more dominant Texan attack.

Tarleton pushed their record to 10-1 after a 70-33 final.  The Texans have their best start since 2002-03 season and are now winners of seven straight games.

After enjoying the holiday break, Tarleton hosts Dallas Christian at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
